The UGMC Pharmacy Directorate provides world-class pharmaceutical services to patients and clients. The operational model has pharmacies located in all clinical areas to ease the provision of pharmaceutical services to patients.VisionTo be distinguished for world-class pharmaceutical service provision, training and research. MissionUGMC Pharmacy Directorate is committed to providing premium pharmaceutical services, training and research by a highly skilled and motivated staff in a friendly environment. Core FunctionsThe Directorate undertakes the following among others:Ensures the selection and availability of high-quality, efficacious and affordable medicines, medical devices and supplies.Ensures the safe and rational use of medicines in patients and staff.Provides information on patients’ medication through adherence and discharge counselling to ensure compliance and adherence to their therapy.Multidisciplinary team support by providing evidence-based information on medicines to optimize patient care.Training of residents, pharmacy students, pharmacy support staff in training and other healthcare workers to obtain the requisite knowledge in pharmacy practice.Education and encouragement of patients to report side effects and adverse reactions encountered while patients are on their medications as well as actions to take when they occur. Pharmacy Directorate subsequently provides prompt reports to FDA on the incidents. Conduction of operational research and development of policies for the safe use of medications at UGMC. The pharmacy directorate is headed by Dr. Josephine Mensah. The pharmacy team comprises of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians/technologists, dispensing assistants, procurement officers, supply chain officers, administrative staff, and orderlies. DepartmentsThe directorate has 3 main departments. These are;Medical storeOutpatient pharmacyClinical/ Inpatient pharmacy Medical Store DepartmentPharm Shadrach Ofoe Hanson heads the medical store. The department ensures the safe acquisition, storage and supply of medicines, medical devices, and supplies to pharmacies and other units in the hospital. The department works closely with the procurement and supply chain, finance, and accredited suppliers to procure medicines. The department is also in charge of managing and organising the safe disposal of expired medicines. Working hoursMonday to Friday: 8:00am - 4:00pm Outpatient Pharmacy DepartmentThe Outpatient pharmacy department (OPD) is headed by Pharm. Angela Appiah Kuffour. It is located on the ground floor of the administration block. The department provides pharmaceutical services to clients who attend any of the specialist OPD clinics. The outpatient pharmacy ensures safe medication use to improve clinical outcomes through the provision of individualized pharmaceutical care. The department is stocked with a wide range of affordable and quality medicines to meet the specific needs of each client.Working HoursMondays to Sundays: 7:00AM – 8:00PMClinical/Inpatient Pharmacy DepartmentThe Clinical and Inpatient Pharmacy is headed by Pharm. Fareeda Serwaa Brobbey. There are six pharmacy units under this department. They are Women and Children, Emergency, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Critical care, and Oncology Pharmacies. The inpatient pharmacies provide services mainly to children or adults on admission who may require services pertaining to surgical and medical conditions, emergency and critical care, obstetric and gynaecological treatment. Some outpatients in our Women and Children block are also catered for. The clinical and inpatient pharmacy department ensures that there is prompt, regular and adequate supply of medications to patients.
