Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Back
Computed Tomography (CT) is one of the advanced medical imaging service provided by the Radiology Department of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). CT imaging uses X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the body. These images assist clinicians in accurately diagnosing, monitoring, and managing a wide range of medical conditions affecting the brain, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, blood vessels, and musculoskeletal system.
At UGMC, CT services support multiple clinical specialties including emergency medicine, surgery, oncology, neurology, cardiology, and internal medicine.

Description of the Modality
CT imaging works by rotating an X-ray tube around the patient to capture multiple images from different angles. These images are reconstructed by a computer into detailed slices and three-dimensional views of internal organs, bones, and blood vessels. Compared to conventional X-rays, CT provides higher image detail and improved visualization of complex anatomical structures.
Some CT examinations require the use of contrast media (administered orally or intravenously) to enhance visibility of blood vessels, organs, and tissues. All CT scans at UGMC are performed by trained radiographers and interpreted by qualified radiologists, following international safety and quality standards.

Patient Preparation
Preparation for a CT scan depends on the type of examination being performed. Patients may be advised to fast for several hours prior to scans that require contrast injection. Patients should inform staff of any known allergies, especially to contrast media, as well as any history of asthma, kidney disease, or pregnancy. All metallic objects such as jewelry, belts, or accessories should be removed before the scan.

Specific Time Slots
CT imaging services at UGMC are provided on a 24-hours basis everyday.

Commitment to Patient Care
UGMC is committed to providing safe, timely, and high-quality CT imaging services in a patient-centered environment.
