Mammography
BackAt the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) radiology department, mammography services provide specialized breast imaging for the early detection, diagnosis, and evaluation of breast conditions. Mammography plays a key role in breast cancer screening, assessment of breast symptoms such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge, and follow-up of previously identified breast abnormalities.
Description of the Modality
Mammography is a low-dose X-ray imaging technique specifically designed to visualize breast tissue. It is highly effective in detecting early breast changes, including small masses and micro calcifications that may not be palpable on physical examination.
During the procedure, the breast is gently compressed between two plates to obtain clear images while minimizing radiation dose. The level of radiation used is low and within internationally accepted safety standards.
Patient Preparation
Patients are advised to attend their mammography appointment without applying deodorants, powders, lotions, or perfumes on the chest or underarm areas, as these substances can interfere with image quality. Patients should inform the radiology staff if they are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have breast implants, prior breast surgery, or previous breast imaging performed elsewhere. There is no requirement for fasting, and patients may take their routine medications unless otherwise advised.
