Management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd. (UGMC) has taken note of comments shared on several social media platforms on 4th August 2026 by Mr. Michael Blackson regarding the care provided to his late mother, who sadly passed away at the Centre on 16th July 2026.
The Management and staff of UGMC extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Blackson and his entire family on the loss of their loved one. We recognise that this is an extremely difficult time for the family, and our thoughts remain with them. UGMC values every patient's and family's experience and considers all feedback, whether positive or critical, as important to improving the quality of care we provide. We have therefore taken the concerns raised very seriously and reviewed them thoroughly, fairly and objectively in accordance with our established clinical and administrative processes.
We wish to state unequivocally that the facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contain numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care to his 83-year-old mother, who was referred to UGMC from a peripheral hospital and throughout her stay at UGMC from 27th May to 16th July 2026 (about 8 weeks).
However, consistent with the ethical standards of our institution and our core values, we have a duty to safeguard the confidentiality of every patient's medical and personal information, an obligation that continues even after death. Accordingly, and out of respect for the dignity of the deceased and the privacy of her family, we will not disclose or discuss in the public domain the details of any patient's diagnosis, treatment, medical records, or account of care.
At UGMC, all clinical decisions are made solely by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with sound medical judgment, established standards of care, and the best interests of the patient. These decisions are made in consultation with, and with the consent of, designated and authorized family representatives where required. Our billing and financial processes are transparent, strictly governed by institutional policies and operate independently of clinical decision-making.
Concerning the reported incident involving the physical assault of Mr. Blackson's sister on a member of staff, the matter has been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities. We do not therefore consider it appropriate for the Centre to comment on it at this time.
We are prepared to engage directly and privately with the family through the appropriate channels, and any specific allegation of misconduct by a member of staff will be investigated fully and, where warranted, referred to the relevant authorities.
We appreciate the public's patience and understanding as we work through this matter with fairness, professionalism, and respect for all parties involved.
Anyone with concerns regarding their experience at UGMC is encouraged to contact our Client Services team via customerrelations@ugmc.ug.edu.gh or 053 110 3136 so that their concerns may be reviewed and addressed through the appropriate channels.
