Nutrition emerged as a key focus in the management of thyroid disorders as the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), in collaboration with the Thyroid Ghana Foundation (TGF), marked World Thyroid Day 2026. The programme provided a platform for healthcare experts, patients and advocates to discuss thyroid health, share experiences and equip participants with knowledge on nutrition, early detection and treatment.
The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), in partnership with the Thyroid Ghana Foundation (TGF), commemorated World Thyroid Day on 26th May 2026 with an educational programme aimed at raising awareness and empowering patients through nutrition and financial support.
The event, held at UGMC, brought together healthcare professionals, nutrition experts, patients, and advocates to discuss the increasing rate of thyroid disorders in Ghana and the importance of timely diagnosis and nutrition in managing the condition.
Speaking on the purpose of the gathering, the Founder of the Thyroid Ghana Foundation, Dr. Nana Adwoa Konadu Dsane, emphasized the need for greater public education on thyroid disease and stated that, "Through constant education, individuals can recognize symptoms of the disease early, seek appropriate care, and improve their quality of life by eating the right foods."
Chairperson of the event and Board Chair of the Thyroid Ghana Foundation, Rev. Prof. P. F. Ayeh-Kumi, called for stronger collaboration among healthcare institutions, patient advocacy groups, and policymakers to improve thyroid care in Ghana. Ms. Emelia Dery Gbogr, Head of Dietetics at UGMC, also emphasized the relationship between nutrition and thyroid function. She mentioned that, "Food is not a cure for thyroid disorders, but proper nutrition plays a critical role in managing symptoms as it supports treatment and enhances the overall well-being of patients affected by the disease."

Head of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department at UGMC, Dr. Michael Damah, educated participants on thyroid disease symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. He encouraged the public to seek medical attention when experiencing persistent symptoms such as unexplained weight changes, neck swelling, fatigue, or changes in heart rate.
Highlights of the event included the sharing of experiences by individuals who have lived with thyroid disease. During these patient testimony sessions, patients shared their harrowing and emotional personal journeys, recounted the challenges they faced before receiving diagnosis and treatment, and described the struggles they encountered while adjusting to the lifelong condition. Their stories provided inspiration and reassurance to participants while underscoring the importance of awareness, timely diagnosis, and access to appropriate care.
"Living with a thyroid disorder can be challenging, but with the right support and treatment, it is possible to live a healthy and fulfilling life," a volunteer shared during the session. A panel discussion was also held, featuring dietitians and nutritionists from the UGMC Dietetics & Food Therapeutics Department, including Emelia Dery Gbogr, Nana Ama Dwamena, and Sarah Salomey Kailey Okine, as well as Mr. Frank Ayinamu, Dietitian of the Thyroid Ghana Foundation. The panel explored practical nutrition strategies for thyroid health and responded to questions from participants. The session provided valuable guidance on healthy eating, symptom management, and lifestyle modifications.
As part of the engagement, the experts demonstrated the preparation of nutritious foods using fresh ingredients such as lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, and other vegetables to create healthy meal options that can support a thyroid-friendly lifestyle.
The event also featured a segment titled, “Know Your Thyroid Health – Screening, Symptoms and Nutrition.” This session was led by representatives from the UGMC Dietetics Department, including RD. Sarah Salomey Kailey Okine, who reinforced the importance of regular health screening and informed dietary choices.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Dsane urged participants to become ambassadors for thyroid awareness in their communities, stating that, "The conversation on thyroid health should not end with the celebrations. Let us continue to educate our families, workplaces, and communities so that more people can access timely diagnosis, treatment, and support."
