The University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd. (UGMC) celebrated Prematurity Awareness Week 2025, a week-long event dedicated to honouring preterm babies and promoting equitable care for all.
Under the theme "Equitable Care for Every Preterm Baby", the event took place from November 17th to 21st, bringing together staff, families, and healthcare teams to celebrate the strength and resilience of preterm babies.
The ceremony kicked off with a symbolic release of purple balloons, symbolizing hope and possibility, as Dr. Abdul Samed-Tanko, CEO of UGMC, cut the ribbon to mark the beginning of the celebrations. Dr. Nyan, Head of the Paediatric Unit, emphasized that each preterm baby represents a miracle and that every act of care counts.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of the UGMC Uplift Fund, aimed at supporting families who cannot afford specialized care for their preterm babies. Donations can be made online, by phone, or at the hospital.
Throughout the week, UGMC organized various activities, including media advocacy, medical screenings, and guidance sessions for expectant mothers on preterm birth prevention and neonatal care. The event culminated in a NICU Graduation ceremony, celebrating the tiny fighters who beat the odds.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Ghana, Hon. John Dumelo, graced occasion as the special guest of honour and pledged his support of GHS10,000 for the Uplift Funds, joining UGMC in its mission to ensure no preterm baby is turned away due to financial challenges.
