OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) is a specialist clinical department responsible for providing safe, high-quality anaesthetic services, perioperative care, pain management, and comprehensive critical care for patients undergoing surgical and medical interventions. The department supports all surgical specialties within the Centre by ensuring patients receive individualized anaesthetic care before, during, and after procedures. Through the use of modern anaesthetic techniques, advanced patient monitoring systems, and evidence-based clinical practice, the department is committed to optimizing patient safety and improving surgical outcomes.

The department also oversees UGMC's critical care services, delivering intensive monitoring and life-support for patients with life-threatening illnesses, traumatic injuries, organ failure, and complex post-operative conditions. The Intensive Care services comprise specialized units designed to meet the diverse needs of critically ill patients, including the General Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (Cardio ICU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Working collaboratively with surgeons, physicians, cardiologists, paediatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals, the department provides multidisciplinary care aimed at achieving the best possible outcomes for every patient.

As one of Ghana's leading tertiary and quaternary healthcare institutions, UGMC's Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is also actively involved in medical education, clinical research, professional training, and continuous quality improvement to advance the practice of anaesthesia and critical care medicine.
