OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT: Our Cardiothoracic and Vascular unit is committed to providing clients with safe, quality care for complex and serious heart (cardio) and chest (thoracic) conditions. The UGMC cardiothoracic and vascular surgery team diagnose and surgically treat conditions of the heart, lungs, blood vessels, the oesophagus and the coronary artery, pacemaker implantation, synchronization therapy, and decoration of clots in the lungs among others. In line with one of the Centre’s core values (technology and innovation), the centre is fully equipped with advanced technology and innovation to give the clients/patients the highest standard of clinical care.

The Centre recently performed its first set of heart surgeries at the cardiothoracic centre successfully in March 2022. The surgeries were carried out by a team of local and foreign-based medical personnel, including a surgeon, anaesthetist and two cardiologists.
