Dr. George Boateng Kyei is the Director of the Medical and Scientific Research Centre (UGMC).

Education
Dr. Kyei obtained his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and later earned an MPhil degree from the University of Ghana where he characterized mycobacteria isolates causing tuberculosis in HIV and non-HIV infected patients. He migrated to the United States in 2003 and earned a PhD in molecular genetics/microbiology at the University of New Mexico, working on the cell biology of HIV/TB interactions in macrophages.
Work Experience
After his internship at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, he served as a family physician for three years at Manna Mission Hospital. As a family physician in Ghana, he treated adults with hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis and HIV; children with complicated malaria and sickle cell disease and women with complications of pregnancy; helped with difficult deliveries and performed C-sections etc.

Dr. Kyei later joined the prestigious Physician Scientist Training Programme at Washington University in St. Louis, USA, where he trained as a consultant in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
His research laboratories at Washington University and Noguchi, supported by the US National Institute of Health and the European Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), are focused on understanding HIV persistence.
Dr. Kyei returned in 2018 to the University of Ghana’s Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
Professional and Research Interests
He is specifically interested in the host factors that enable viruses to persist in patients in the face of anti-retroviral therapy and strong immune pressure and would be thrilled to identify and characterize therapeutic targets leading to a cure for HIV.

As Director of Medical and Scientific research at UGMC, Dr. Kyei will oversee hospital-wide research operations and provide strategic vision to make medical research an integral part of the Centre.
