Head of Medical Physics
Mercy Torshie Schandorf is a Clinical Medical Physicist at the University of Ghana Medical Centre and the first in Ghana to be selected as part of the five-member 2026–2027 cohort for the prestigious International Council Associate Mentorship Programme (ICAMP) under the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
Mercy has experience in diagnostic radiology physics, radiation safety, and quality assurance in medical imaging. Her work focuses on ensuring imaging quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance across diagnostic imaging modalities, including MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, angiography, ultrasound, and digital radiography.
She is actively involved in clinical training, research supervision, and international quality improvement initiatives aimed at strengthening medical physics practice and healthcare delivery in Ghana and across Africa. Mercy is also passionate about STEM outreach, mentorship, and advancing opportunities for young women in science and healthcare.
EDUCATION
Miss Schandorf holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Physics (Biomedical Physics) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi (2014–2018).
She subsequently obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Medical Physics from the University of Ghana (2019–2021), where she received advanced training in radiation physics, dosimetry, and clinical medical physics practice.
She has also received additional training from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
WORK EXPERIENCE
Mercy currently serves as a Lead Clinical Medical Physicist in the Radiology Department at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. In this role, she is responsible for quality assurance and quality control of diagnostic imaging equipment, radiation safety management, dose optimization, and supporting clinical and research activities within the department. She also contributes to the clinical training of medical physics trainees and allied health professionals.
Prior to joining UGMC, she completed her Medical Physics residency training at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital under the Oncology Directorate, where she gained experience in radiotherapy quality assurance, treatment planning, and patient setup verification.
She has also worked with the Ghana Health Service and completed internship training at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.
Mercy additionally served as Medical Physics Lead for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s QUAADRIL audit initiative, the first diagnostic radiology quality audit conducted in Africa by the IAEA.
She is currently the Assistant Treasurer of the Ghana Society for Medical Physics. She also serves as a member of several committees of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and as Secretary of the Profession Specific Committee for Medical Physics of the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC).
