Mrs. Afua Gakpe is a Nurse-Midwife and Public Health Professional with extensive experience in clinical nursing practice, outpatient care management, reproductive health, health promotion, and clinical quality improvement. She has developed expertise in providing holistic, patient-centred care while supporting improved healthcare outcomes through effective nursing leadership, mentorship, and quality improvement practices. 

She currently serves as the Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Out Patient Department, where she provides leadership in coordinating outpatient nursing services, supporting clinical teams, ensuring quality patient care delivery, and promoting excellence in professional nursing practice.

Work Experience
Mrs. Afua Gakpe has over 20 years of experience in nursing and midwifery practice, with extensive clinical and leadership experience across outpatient departments, maternity units, medical and surgical wards, and private healthcare facilities. 

Since November 2019, she has served as the Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Out Patient Department. In this role, she provides leadership and supervision for nursing teams, coordinates patient care activities, supports ward and unit managers, ensures effective patient flow, promotes adherence to clinical standards, and contributes to the delivery of safe and quality healthcare services. 

Her responsibilities include receiving and coordinating referred patients from various healthcare facilities, patient assessment and monitoring, medication administration, intravenous therapy, wound care, minor clinical procedures, health education, infection prevention practices, staff mentorship, stock management, and ensuring compliance with professional and institutional standards. 

Prior to joining UGMC, Mrs. Gakpe served as a Principal Nursing Officer at Madina Polyclinic (Rawlings Circle), where she worked in both the Maternity Ward and Out Patient Department. She provided clinical leadership in maternity care, outpatient services, patient management, antenatal care, counselling, health education, staff supervision, and training of nursing professionals. 

She previously worked as a Nursing Officer at Tema Polyclinic, where she provided nursing and midwifery services in the Maternity Ward and Out Patient Department. Her responsibilities included patient assessment, maternity care, delivery of babies, antenatal services, counselling, health education, medication administration, wound care, and clinical procedures. 

Mrs. Gakpe has also gained experience in private healthcare facilities, including Doron Medical Center and Lucida Clinic, where she provided comprehensive nursing care, supported patient admissions and referrals, managed critically ill patients, assisted with emergency care, provided maternity services, and contributed to health education and patient counselling.

Mrs. Gakpe’s professional and research interests include population health, family health, reproductive health, maternal and child health, health promotion, and clinical quality improvement.
