UGMC Dep. Director of Nursing Services, CSSD

Mrs. Sylvia Agyeiwaa Acheampong is a Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO) and experienced Registered Nurse with extensive expertise in clinical nursing practice, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) management, healthcare leadership, and quality improvement. She has over 22 years of combined professional experience, including specialised experience in recovery ward nursing and CSSD operations. 

She has played a key role in strengthening CSSD services through operational development, staff training, infection prevention and control practices, and the promotion of patient safety standards. Her professional practice reflects a strong commitment to clinical excellence, evidence-based nursing, workforce development, and effective healthcare service delivery.

Mrs. Acheampong has over 22 years of nursing experience, including eight years of practice in recovery ward nursing and eight years of leadership experience in Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) management. 

During her time in recovery ward nursing at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, she provided post-operative monitoring, patient assessment, acute care support, and recovery management while ensuring safe and effective clinical care for patients following surgical procedures. 

She later transitioned into CSSD practice, where she contributed to the establishment and operational development of CSSD services. As Head of CSSD, she has provided leadership in managing sterilization services, decontamination processes, equipment handling, infection prevention practices, staff training, and operational improvement initiatives. 

At the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Mrs. Acheampong contributed to the establishment and training of CSSD staff, supporting the development of systems and processes that promote operational excellence, patient safety, and quality healthcare delivery. 

Mrs. Acheampong’s professional and research interests include CSSD leadership and management, infection prevention and control, clinical governance, quality improvement, healthcare leadership, workforce development, patient safety, evidence-based nursing practice, sterilization best practices, and healthcare service delivery improvement. 

Mrs. Acheampong possesses expertise in CSSD leadership and operations, sterilization and decontamination processes, infection prevention and control, recovery and post-operative nursing care, clinical leadership, healthcare governance, quality improvement, workforce training, mentorship, operational planning, and service development. 

She demonstrates strong leadership, supervision, communication, and organisational skills, with a commitment to strengthening healthcare systems through effective clinical management, staff development, patient safety initiatives, and continuous improvement of nursing and support services.

Mrs. Sylvia Agyeiwaa Acheampong holds a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Clinical Leadership and Management from the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Legon, obtained in 2023. She also holds a Certificate in CSSD Management from Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Israel (2015), a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Nursing with Psychology from the University of Ghana, Legon (2012), a State Registered Nurse (SRN) qualification (2003), and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Nursing from the University of Ghana, Legon (2001). 

Mrs. Acheampong is proficient in English and Twi languages.
