GHANA VAST/ SimPACT (MEPA) TRAINING PROGAMME, 2025 - UGMC MTSC

Posted on: May 14, 2025

The VAST/MEPA training programme is a simulation-based educational collaboration between the UGMC-MTSC, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), Ghana Anaesthesiologists Society (GAS), Obstetric Teams of Participating Facilities, the University of Cape Town Simulation for Paediatric Anaesthesia Crisis Training (SimPACT/MEPA) Team and Vital Anaesthesia Simulation Training (VAST).

VAST Course – Brief Introduction
A two-day program focusing on the core aspects that promote the provision of safe anaesthesia and peri-operative care. Predominantly using simulation, the course centres on anaesthesia and resuscitation for obstetrics, paediatrics and trauma as well as safe general surgery, pre- and post-operative care, with an underlying focus on non-technical skills. Targeted case-based discussions and skills stations further explore non-technical skills, trauma primary survey, difficult airway management, neonatal resuscitation, pain management and complex decision-making.

A graduate of the VAST Course will be able to:
  •  Recognise key non-technical skills applicable to anaesthesia
  •  Demonstrate a systematic approach to patient assessment
  •  Plan and prepare before the delivery of anaesthesia
  •  Utilise a systematic approach to managing the unwell patient
  •  Communicate effectively

VAST Facilitator Course
The Facilitator Course is a three-day introduction to simulation education, including conducting and debriefing VAST simulation scenarios. Facilitator course graduates will be mentored in delivering future VAST Courses to help consolidate new skills.
This model promotes ongoing course delivery and fosters program sustainability. Skills learned in the facilitator course are transferable and broadly applicable to health professional education.

Simulation for Paediatric Anaesthesia Crisis Training (SimPACT) SimPACT, which was until recently known as MEPA (Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia), aims to allow all anaesthetic trainees, surgical and perioperative staff, to develop management strategies for emergencies in paediatric anaesthesia through the use of high fidelity simulation.
It is a collaboration of specialist paediatric anaesthetists from across the globe (which originated from Bristol Children’s Hospital but has evolved into an international organisation) with an interest in simulation-based training.
A unique feature of the MEPA course is that all scenarios are expert, peer-reviewed and literature-based and followed by presentations.
The course provides a comprehensive update in paediatric anaesthesia and resuscitation of the sick child for those who undertake an occasional paediatric list, provide out-of-hours care or may be involved in the care of the sick child.

“We hope that you will find the scenarios challenging and useful for updating and maintaining skills in the care of children.”
