Profile
Dr. Baffoe Gyan is the Director of Medical Affairs at the University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd (UGMC). Before this appointment, he served as the concurrent Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic/Vascular Surgery and the Department of Surgery at UGMC.
Education
He started his secondary education at Wenchi Secondary School (WESS) before travelling to Cuba on a scholarship to pursue his junior and high school certificates. Between 1993 and 1999, he studied medicine at the High Institute of Medical Sciences Santa Clara/ Villa Clara, Cuba and graduated with a First Class Award.
After graduation, he declined the opportunity to pursue a specialization program in Cuba and opted to return to Ghana for his housemanship training at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. After his housemanship, he returned to Cuba to pursue a postgraduate program in general surgery. During this time, he also worked at the Calixto Garcia Teaching Hospital in Havana, Cuba and successfully passed the entrance exams to specialize in cardiovascular surgery. He started his post-graduate specialization in cardiovascular surgery in 2003, and upon completion of the degree in 2007, he became a fellow of the Cuban College of Cardiovascular Surgery.
During this period, he also travelled to Argentina and Uruguay to undergo specialist training in off-pump cardiac surgeries; cardiac device implantation; heart transplant and ventricular assist device insertions.
He completed a certificate in Health Administration Management in 2016.
Work Experience
Dr. Gyan has over 24 yrs of professional experience in cardiovascular surgery. He currently serves as the Director of Medical Affairs of UGMC as well as a Consultant Cardiovascular Surgeon at UGMC’s Department of Surgery. He joined UGMC in 2019 and successfully established a Cardiothoracic Vascular Department at the Centre. Before this, he worked as a Consultant Cardiovascular Surgeon at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (2009-2019). Between 2001 and 2007, he worked in cardiovascular departments at Hospital Hno Ameijeiras and Calixto Garcia (Cuba). He also undertook his housemanship at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (2000-2001).
As a cardiovascular specialist, he has acquired hands-on working experience at notable health institutions such as Foundacion Favaloro and Hospital Agudo Cosmos Argerich, Buenos Aire, Argentina; Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, South Africa and Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Professional and Research Interests
Dr. Baffoe Gyan’s professional areas of interest include complex aortic surgeries and heart transplants. He is currently undertaking a research project on Chronic Thrombolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Pulmonary Embolism
